Yassine YAZE Mekhnache presents his latest individual exhibition The Conference of the Birds [ الطير منطق ] at the Sahrai Hotel in Fez, from October 3rd 2015 to January 10th 2016.
This Solo Show brings together several artworks on canvas and paper by Yaze, widely known for his abstract painting centered on color and movement. The exhibition stands for the (initial) culmination of the artist’s oeuvre, inspired, since nearly ten years, by the poetic and mystic « Conference of the Birds », written by Farid al-Attar (XIIth century).
Indeed since 2007, YAZE has been sharing close ties with Morocco, especially through his collaboration with Moroccan embroiderers.
The artist expresses the link between tradition and modernity through his work on the cotton’s fabrics weaved traditionally by the embroiderers of Tamesloht. His artwork merge together the painter graphical impacts and the figurative drawings embroidered in Fez stitch.
By this mixed marriage of the fineness of the embroideries and the energy of his work, Yaze takes us into a vibrant pictorial world. This exhibition also crowns an exceptionnal year for Yassine Mekhnache : after releasing his « Conference of the Birds » at the David Bloch Gallery Marrakesh, last March, the artist took centre stage at Art Paris and was the object of a documentary film by Rachid Djaidani. Entitled « Encré », this documentary was partly shot in Morocco, especially in the art center Dar Al-Ma’mûn, where Yassine Mekhnache has been in residency several times in the past years.
Dear to the artist, this new exhibition at the Sahrai Hotel is also marked with a contemporary celebration of the ancestral and traditional art of the Moroccan embroidery in its jewel case, the imperial city of Fez.
