Jaybo (1968) is a runaway, setting out and wandering along in a physical as well as in a creative sense.
In his youth, he ran away from his home in southern France, settling in Kreuzberg, Berlin at the beginning of the 1980s.
When he founded the streetwear label ‘Irie Daily’ and the cultural magazine ‘Style’ at the beginning of the 1990s, his influence on Berlin’s youth culture and fashion scene could be clearly seen.
Even today, urban subculture is the driving force behind his artistic activities.
Nailing down Jaybo’s work to a specific artistic genre seems nearly impossible in the face of the creative impulsiveness and eager experimentation that provide the key to understanding the allure of his work; work which meaningfully negotiates between the genres of pop art, graffiti and street art, and which also unselfconsciously contain implicit elements of Dadaism and Surrealism.
Artist Statement
I explore the relationship between first impressions and emotional memories.
I am fascinated by the endless oscillation of the human condition and his tragedy of distress.
I would love to let the viewer working on the edges of his emotional borders, left alone with the limits of his own world.
I’d love to do a painting, that you’ll have to touch just to break those borders made out of fears and comforts. I get my inspiration through any kind of relationship between humans, from love to violence, from animalistic to high intellectual issues.
